Dr. Charles Obiaja, MD

Board-Certified Family Physician

Dr. Charles Obiaja is a board-certified family physician with over two decades of diverse clinical experience and a deep commitment to helping individuals overcome substance use disorders. His approach to care is rooted in a patient-centered model—one that views patients as whole people with unique life stories, encourages shared decision-making, and builds therapeutic relationships based on trust and empathy.

Dr. Obiaja’s passion for recovery care is both professional and personal. His own journey through recovery has given him a profound, firsthand understanding of addiction—a condition often misunderstood and stigmatized. This experience informs his work and enhances his ability to support patients with authenticity, compassion, and hope for long-term healing.

Dr. Obiaja earned his medical degree from the Superior Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Havana, Cuba. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Selma Family Medicine Program, where he was honored as the first-ever recipient of the Donald Overstreet Living Memorial Award for Best Resident.

Over the years since graduation from medical school, Dr. Obiaja has practiced medicine across a variety of settings—including five years in hospital and primary care in Jamaica, and eight years serving rural communities across North Carolina in roles spanning primary care, nursing home, and hospital medicine.

He spent nearly seven years as a medical provider at the R.J. Blackley Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center, where he managed complex detox cases and provided medical support for individuals navigating recovery. He received specialized training in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), and later joined Central Regional Hospital in Butner—North Carolina’s largest psychiatric facility—where he managed medical complications of psychiatric medications, supervised advanced practice providers, and trained psychiatric residents.

Dr Obiaja moved into private practice as a substance abuse physician at New Waters Recovery in Raleigh North Carolina assisting patient detoxify from various substances and managing their medical comorbidities.

Dr. Obiaja believes in the power of listening with humility, honoring each patient’s lived experience, and walking alongside them in their journey toward recovery. His goal is to build a collaborative and therapeutic alliance that empowers individuals to reclaim their health, dignity, and future.
